Start with a puppy-height safety check
Puppies explore with their mouths, and the things they can reach change as they grow. ASPCA warns that “Puppies typically have trouble finding something they don’t want to chew.” ASPCA’s puppy-preparation guide and American Humane Society’s new-puppy checklist both recommend looking for hazards a puppy can access.

- Scan floors and low shelves for coins, small toys, hair ties, rubber bands, plastic bags, string, and other objects small enough to fit in the puppy’s mouth.
- Check under and behind furniture and appliances for objects, narrow gaps, or places where a puppy could get stuck.
- Look for accessible cords, dangling strings, open storage, and unstable objects that could fall or tip.
- Repeat the check as your puppy grows and becomes able to reach new surfaces.
Secure hazards by room
Kitchen, bathroom, laundry, and storage
Put medicines, cleaning products, laundry detergent, pesticides, rodenticides, and other hazardous supplies behind closed doors or in storage the puppy cannot reach. Shut cabinets; add a childproof latch if the puppy can nose into or open one. Keep trash and food inaccessible, and do not leave medications, candles, or cleaning products on reachable counters. A bait station labeled “pet-resistant” is not proof that it is puppy-proof, the ASPCA cautions.

Move electrical cords out of reach or secure them against chewing. Tie up blind cords, curtain pulls, and other dangling strings. Pick up children’s small toys, and stabilize objects or furniture that might tip or fall. AAHA’s lifestyle and safety guidance also identifies household hazards and the need for appropriate control of dogs.

Plants and yard
Identify houseplants and move or remove those that are poisonous to dogs. Check the yard for potentially poisonous plants and any current or old insecticide or rodenticide placements. The ASPCA and American Humane Society advise checking plants and outdoor hazards. Their guidance is not an exhaustive plant list; verify a specific plant with a veterinarian or a reliable plant-toxicology resource.
Windows, stairs, and rooms to block
Make sure open windows have secure screens and locks. Close doors or install a suitable, securely fitted gate to keep the puppy out of unsafe rooms or away from stairs. Choose a gate for the opening’s width and shape, mounting location, and your puppy’s size and abilities; follow the manufacturer’s fit and installation instructions. There is no single gate style that suits every doorway or location.

Set up a safe home base and supervise exploration
Prepare a quiet, puppy-proofed starter area with water, bedding, and appropriate toys. Keep other rooms closed or gated at first, and let the puppy adjust before gradually opening up more of the home. Stay close and actively supervise while the puppy explores; when you cannot give direct attention, use a safe, suitable management area.

If you choose to use one, help the puppy see it as a positive place by pairing it with meals, treats, and play rather than using confinement as a substitute for care or supervision. Plan the rescue puppy’s first veterinary visit
Ask the rescue for the puppy’s available medical records and for any known health or behavior needs. Schedule a veterinary examination as soon as possible after bringing the puppy home, and take vaccination and deworming information to the appointment, as the AVMA recommends. Ask your veterinarian about puppy-specific questions involving a plant, chemical, medication exposure, or confinement.

Contact a veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center promptly if you suspect the puppy has encountered poison or swallowed a dangerous substance. The ASPCA lists its U.S. APCC number as (888) 426-4435; confirm current contact details and service terms directly with the organization. Do not induce vomiting or give a home treatment based only on general web advice.
