What to Do If You Find an Injured or Sick Seagull

If you find a sick or injured seagull, keep people and pets away and call a local wildlife service or veterinarian before moving it. Don’t feed, water, or treat it unless advised.

Keep your distance, keep people and pets away, and call a local wildlife rescue, wildlife authority, or veterinarian for advice. Don’t feed, water, medicate, or handle the gull unless a local professional tells you to. Call before moving or transporting it: intake policies and bird-flu precautions vary by location.

What to do first

  1. Observe from a safe distance. Note where the gull is, what looks wrong, and whether there is an immediate hazard. Don’t crowd it, and keep people and pets back. UK government guidance advises keeping as far from wild birds as possible: Avian influenza (bird flu): advice for the public to reduce the risk of catching avian influenza.
  2. Contact local help. Call a wildlife rescue, wildlife authority, or veterinarian. Describe the bird and its location, then ask whether it needs to be moved and where it can be taken. Phone before transport; some services may not accept gulls or may have changed their intake arrangements. See, for example, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission guidance and New Zealand Department of Conservation guidance.
  3. Wait for instructions. Don’t offer food or water, give medicine, or try home treatment. RSPCA advice for baby gulls is to seek help from a vet or wildlife rehabilitation centre if the bird is sick or injured: RSPCA: Baby seagulls. New Zealand DOC also advises against feeding or treating sick wildlife.

Should you feed or give water to a sick seagull?

No—not unless a local wildlife professional specifically instructs you to. Food or water offered by hand requires approaching the bird, and improvised care can conflict with advice for its condition. Canada’s wild-bird influenza guidance also advises against feeding gulls by hand: Environment and Climate Change Canada: Avian influenza in wild birds. Keep your distance while you arrange local advice.

What if it is a young gull on the ground?

A young gull on the ground is not automatically abandoned; juvenile gulls may be there while still being cared for. Don’t pick it up just because it is grounded. Keep people and animals away, and call for advice if it appears injured or sick, or its condition is worsening. RSPCA guidance covers young gulls and when to seek help.

Protect people and pets

Sick or dead wild birds can be subject to local avian-influenza precautions, but appearance alone cannot establish that a gull has bird flu. The UK government notes that wild birds can appear sick for many reasons and not every sick or dead bird is infected. Follow current local instructions, avoid contact, and wash your hands after any unavoidable contact. Australian government guidance says: “If you find an injured bird or other animal, avoid contact, record the location and phone wildlife rescue in your state or territory.” See Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry: Frequently asked questions for H5 bird flu.

If local professionals direct you to intervene and contact cannot be avoided, follow their handling directions and the relevant public-health advice. Australian guidance describes waterproof disposable gloves among the precautions for unavoidable handling; gloves are not permission to approach or catch a gull, and they do not replace professional instructions.

If the gull is dead

Don’t handle it. Check your local government’s reporting guidance, especially if several birds are affected or authorities are monitoring disease. Who to contact and whether a report is requested depends on your location; do not assume another country’s hotline or procedure applies.

Why calling first matters

Rules, reporting thresholds, disease controls, and rescue capacity differ by jurisdiction and can change. A wildlife facility may not accept every species, and some services ask people not to bring sick birds directly to an office or rehabilitation centre. For example, Florida FWC warns that facilities in affected areas may not take gulls and other specified birds, while New Zealand DOC says not to take sick birds directly to DOC offices or rehabilitation centres. Confirm the destination and next step with a local service before moving the gull.
