A 38-year-old woman suffered serious leg injuries when a freshwater crocodile bit her while she was swimming at Butler Cove, Lake Argyle, on May 2, 2022. The following day, Western Australia’s Parks and Wildlife Service destroyed a similarly sized crocodile after staff saw it approach and interact with their vessel. The woman was reported stable in hospital; the reports do not say she was killed.
What happened at Lake Argyle in 2022?
The attack occurred on Monday, May 2, at Butler Cove, a recreation and swimming area at Lake Argyle in Western Australia’s East Kimberley. The 38-year-old woman was taken to Kununurra Hospital and then transferred to Broome Regional Hospital because of the extent of her injuries. A WA Country Health spokesperson told ABC that her condition was stable.

Reports said a freshwater crocodile estimated at about 2 to 2.5 metres was seen in the area soon after the attack. That is an approximate reported size, not a confirmed identification of the animal that bit the swimmer.
Why did authorities destroy a crocodile?
On May 3, Parks and Wildlife Service East Kimberley District staff patrolling Butler Cove encountered a crocodile of similar size. It approached and interacted with their vessel. The WA Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) said the behaviour, considered alongside the previous day’s attack, was consistent with what staff would identify as a problem animal.

An unnamed DBCA spokesperson said: “Both the behaviour of a crocodile approaching the boat and the events of the previous day is consistent with what staff would identify as a problem animal.” The department said staff destroyed the animal to protect public safety in a popular swimming and recreation area, with the annual Lake Argyle Swim due to take place that weekend.
The contemporaneous reports describe a similar-size crocodile and DBCA’s assessment; they do not establish forensic confirmation that the destroyed animal was the one that bit the woman. The agency’s decision was about the circumstances and perceived public-safety risk, not a general finding that freshwater crocodiles are normally aggressive. The spokesperson said they are not usually considered dangerous, while cautioning that their behaviour can change when people feed or interact with them.

How is this different from the May 2026 incident?
Lake Argyle had a separately reported suspected crocodile-bite incident on Friday evening, May 1, 2026, the day before that year’s Lake Argyle Swim. ABC reported that four people were bitten by a suspected freshwater crocodile. One man in his 60s was flown to Perth for treatment and reported stable. DBCA said it would monitor the situation and conduct patrols that week. This was a distinct later event; reporting does not connect it to the crocodile destroyed in 2022.

In the 2022 report, DBCA advised people not to feed or interact with freshwater crocodiles.
