The bird that appeared to ask “You alright, love?” was identified as a pied crow—not a magpie—in reports by National Geographic and the Press Association. The exchange, filmed in Yorkshire, is a striking example of apparent human-speech mimicry; it does not show that the bird understood the words.
What happened in the Yorkshire clip?
Reports described a bird approaching Lisa Brooks and her husband, Mark, at Knaresborough Castle in Yorkshire. It appeared to say, “You alright, love?” and later, “I’m alright.” PerthNow reported that Brooks uploaded the footage to Facebook before its July 4, 2018 article; National Geographic and the Press Association also placed the filmed encounter at Knaresborough Castle.

The original PerthNow headline called the bird a magpie. National Geographic’s report and the Press Association report published by The Courier identified it as a pied crow, so “magpie” is not the supported identification for the bird in the clip.

The first widely reported headline used that label, but the later reports naming the bird as a pied crow provide the corroborating identification. The Press Association report also relayed an RSPB spokeswoman’s explanation that pied crows are found throughout Africa. The available accounts do not explain how this bird came to be at the Yorkshire location, so its individual history should not be inferred from the clip.

Was the bird actually talking to the woman?
The reports describe the sounds as phrases that the bird appeared to say. That is evidence of apparent vocal mimicry, not proof of a conversation in the human sense. The clip and the cited reporting do not establish that the bird understood “You alright, love?” or intended its reply as an answer.
Can crows mimic human speech?
Yes. An RSPB spokeswoman quoted by the Press Association said that birds beyond parrots and budgerigars can learn basic words and phrases, particularly corvids—the family that includes crows, rooks and ravens. She described corvids as intelligent animals capable of problem-solving and using simple tools.

The spokeswoman added that a pet crow may pick up phrases it hears often, and that its accent would most likely come from its owner. Those are general explanations, not a documented account of this pied crow: the reports do not establish whether it was a pet, who cared for it, or what sounds it had heard repeatedly.

National Geographic’s coverage offers a useful distinction: vocal learners hear and imitate sounds, but corvids are not as vocally skilled as parrots, according to National Aviary ornithologist Robert Mulvihill. Oregon Zoo director Don Moore told the magazine that bird cognition is still being explored. Neither observation demonstrates that the bird in the video grasped the meaning of its phrases.
