The Basin on Rottnest Island was closed at about 2 p.m. on Thursday, 18 January 2024, after a shark estimated at roughly two metres was spotted. PerthNow reported three sightings that afternoon and described the closure as the third in five days. This is a report of a past closure, not a current beach warning.
Why was The Basin closed?
Surf Life Saving WA announced the closure after a shark sighting, according to PerthNow’s report by Natalie Richards, published 18 January 2024. The article reported three sightings that afternoon:

- At 1:19 p.m., a shark was reported 25 metres offshore.
- At 1:21 p.m., another sighting was reported.
- At 2:51 p.m., a shark was reported 450 metres offshore and circling in the area.
The shark that prompted the closure was described as roughly two metres long. PerthNow did not identify its species, so the report does not establish whether it was a tiger shark or any other particular kind.

What did beachgoers see?
Beachgoer Dylan Easter told PerthNow that an earlier response involved a helicopter circling, an alarm over a megaphone and lifeguards clearing swimmers from the water. His account describes what he witnessed; it is not an official explanation of the closure procedure.

Why was it described as the third closure in five days?
PerthNow said The Basin had been closed twice earlier in the same five-day period following other shark sightings: a 3.5-metre tiger shark was spotted 200 metres offshore earlier in the week, and a 2.5-metre shark sighting on Saturday also led to a closure. Those earlier reports are separate from the unidentified shark reported on Thursday.
When did The Basin reopen?
PerthNow’s January 2024 report does not give a reopening time for that closure. A later SharkSmart Western Australia advisory concerns a separate event in June 2026, when a reported whale carcass prompted closures at The Basin, Longreach Bay Beach and Pinky Beach from 23 June. The advisory says The Basin reopened on 29 June, with extra caution still recommended because residue from the carcass might attract sharks. Is The Basin open now?
The January 2024 report and the June 2026 advisory do not establish the beach’s live status today. Before heading to The Basin, check current official notices, including SharkSmart updates and Surf Life Saving WA channels. Follow any closure or directions from local government rangers, Parks and Wildlife Service officers or Surf Life Saving WA.
