A peer-reviewed study published in PLOS One on July 9, 2025 described Spelaeochthonius dugigulensis, S. geumgulensis, S. magwihalmigulensis, and S. yamigulensis. The specimens were collected in 2022 and 2023 from separate South Korean caves and were identified using detailed anatomy, geographic information, and DNA evidence.
What is the “dragon-like” animal?
These animals are called dragon pseudoscorpions because their front gripping structures—particularly their large chelicerae and pedipalps—give them a dragon-jaw appearance under magnification.

They are only a few millimeters long. The study reported a body length of about 1.26 millimeters for the described female of S. magwihalmigulensis, while described S. dugigulensis material measured roughly 2.05 to 2.07 millimeters. The other newly described species were similarly tiny.
Despite the name, pseudoscorpions are not dragons and are not true scorpions. They belong to the arachnid order Pseudoscorpiones. Unlike true scorpions, they have no long tail and no stinging tail tip. Pseudoscorpions are generally considered small and harmless to people.
The four new species and where they were found
| Species | Collection site | Location in South Korea |
|---|---|---|
| Spelaeochthonius dugigulensis | Dugigul Cave | Uljin County, Gyeongsangbuk Province |
| S. geumgulensis | Geum Cave | Danyang County, Chungcheongbuk Province |
| S. magwihalmigulensis | Magwihalmigul Cave | Gangneung, Gangwon Province |
| S. yamigulensis | Yamigul Cave | Jeongseon County, Gangwon Province |
Each species name refers to its cave locality. The researchers’ South Korean analysis recognized seven species in the genus Spelaeochthonius, including these four species new to science. The genus has been reported from caves in China, Japan, and the Korean Peninsula.

The four species show features associated with life underground:
- Very small bodies: They measure only around one to two millimeters in the described material.
- Large front appendages: Their chelicerae and pedipalps are disproportionately prominent and are used to grasp prey.
- Reduced or absent eyes: The genus is generally described as blind or eyeless. The four South Korean species are presented as strongly cave-adapted and eyeless or blind.
- Pale coloration: Reported colors include pale orange, reddish orange, brown, and related shades.
- Strong cave specialization: The genus is considered strongly troglobitic, meaning adapted to permanent or prolonged life in caves.
“Blind” should not be treated as an absolute rule for every species in the genus. The study notes that S. tuoliangensis from China retains residual eyes. That exception does not change the description of the four South Korean species, which are strongly associated with dark subterranean habitats.
How scientists determined that they were new species
The researchers did not identify the animals from a dramatic photograph or from their general appearance alone. They used an integrative-taxonomy approach, combining several types of evidence.
Morphology
They examined fine anatomical details that are easy to miss without microscopy, including:

DNA and evolutionary relationships
The study also analyzed mitochondrial COI sequence data and used a maximum-likelihood phylogenetic analysis to examine relationships among the sampled lineages.
The researchers found genetic differentiation among the lineages, but they did not treat one DNA percentage as an automatic species boundary. A useful example is the comparison between S. dentifer and S. magwihalmigulensis. Their COI divergence was lower than a commonly cited putative threshold, yet the researchers considered them distinct because they also differed morphologically and were separated by approximately 47 kilometers of non-interconnected karst systems.
That is why modern species identification often combines DNA with anatomy, geography, and ecology. A genetic-distance cutoff can be helpful, but it is not a universal rule that settles every taxonomic question by itself.
Were the animals found in a South Korean tourist cave?
Not according to the study. The reported collection sites were Dugigul, Geum, Magwihalmigul, and Yamigul caves. They should not be confused with Baengnyong Cave, a separate officially operated South Korean cave attraction.
Baengnyong Cave is useful as general context: South Korea’s official Baengnyong Cave Ecology Center describes it as Natural Monument No. 260 and emphasizes its academic, archaeological, landscape, and biological value. Its guided exploratory tours require advance reservations and include a commentator, helmet, safety clothing, and boots.
However, that tourism information does not show that any of the four new pseudoscorpions live in Baengnyong Cave or that visitors can see them. The research caves should not be presented as ordinary tourist destinations, either.
Why this discovery matters
The important finding is not evidence of a mythical creature. It is evidence that South Korea’s underground biodiversity remains poorly documented.

The study says South Korea has more than 1,000 caves according to cited karst research, with major cave-bearing areas including parts of the Taebaek and Sobaek mountain ranges. The researchers also reported that almost every cave system they visited during targeted surveys contained cave-adapted pseudoscorpion fauna that had not previously been known.

That does not mean every cave contains a new species, or that scientists have found all of South Korea’s cave animals. It means that focused surveys are revealing diversity that earlier sampling missed. The four species may be only a small part of the country’s subterranean invertebrate fauna.
Why single-cave species can be vulnerable
Each of the four species was associated with one cave or one karst system in the study. A very narrow distribution can make a species especially vulnerable because it may have nowhere else to go if its underground habitat is damaged.
Potential threats discussed by the researchers include:
- pollution entering cave or groundwater systems;
- physical destruction or alteration of caves;
- flooding and other changes to subterranean conditions;
- loss of the connected karst habitat on which cave organisms depend.
Because these animals are so small and live in places that are difficult to survey, researchers often cannot yet estimate their total population or full geographic range. The study calls for more targeted surveys, additional taxonomic work, and distribution modeling. Those steps can support cave biodiversity conservation before habitat damage makes already rare species even harder to find.

These pseudoscorpions are not newly discovered pets, and the study does not support keeping them in household enclosures. Their tiny size, specialized cave habitat, limited known distribution, and uncertain ecological requirements make collecting or attempting to maintain wild specimens inappropriate.
They are also not a danger to cats, dogs, or people based on the information reported in the study. The “dragon” label describes their appearance, especially their enlarged jaws, not their behavior or threat level.

Bottom line
South Korean researchers described four new species of millimeter-sized, cave-adapted pseudoscorpions in 2025. Their large front appendages make them look vaguely dragon-like, but they are harmless arachnids—not dragons, true scorpions, or giant cave predators. Their discovery matters because it shows how much subterranean biodiversity may remain undocumented and why protecting isolated cave and karst ecosystems is important.
Frequently Asked Questions
Was the South Korean cave creature really a dragon?
No. The animals are tiny pseudoscorpions, not dragons or large unknown vertebrates. The dragon comparison refers to their enlarged front appendages, which resemble miniature jaws.

Are dragon pseudoscorpions true scorpions or dangerous?
No. Pseudoscorpions belong to the order Pseudoscorpiones and lack the long tail and stinging tail tip of true scorpions. They are generally considered harmless to people and pets.
Which caves contained the newly described species?
The four species were collected from Dugigul Cave, Geum Cave, Magwihalmigul Cave, and Yamigul Cave. They were not reported from Baengnyong Cave, a separate officially operated tourist attraction.
What are the names of the four new pseudoscorpion species?
The study described four new species: Spelaeochthonius dugigulensis, S. geumgulensis, S. magwihalmigulensis, and S. yamigulensis.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The “dragon-like creature” was a group of four tiny new pseudoscorpion species, each associated with a South Korean cave. Their dragon resemblance comes from enlarged jaw-like appendages; the real scientific story is the underexplored biodiversity and conservation vulnerability of Korea’s cave ecosystems.
