The condition is called atresia ani. A July update said he had started defecating independently, but the available reporting does not establish his health or fundraising status today.
What happened to Tooshie
PerthNow reported on 19 June 2025 that Tooshie was surrendered to Warwick Veterinary Hospital after vomiting and appearing bloated. The clinic discovered that he had atresia ani, described in the report as a birth defect in which the anus is missing or blocked. Practice manager Kate Doyle said the hospital began urgent surgery. The report later said Tooshie needed revision surgery because he continued to have difficulty toileting, and that he would need lifelong care. These details are PerthNow’s account, not an independently reviewed medical record. PerthNow, 19 June 2025

Doyle described the discovery to PerthNow: “We tried to insert a thermometer and there was no hole for it to go into.” She also said: “Some of the vets that I work with here have been vets for 20, 30 years and they’ve never seen a case like this.”
What is atresia ani?
Atresia ani, also called imperforate anus, is a congenital defect in which the membrane separating the rectum and anus fails to rupture. Depending on the anatomy, an animal may have no anal opening or an obstruction, and related malformations can occur. A rectovaginal fistula—an abnormal connection between the rectum and vagina—is one possible associated defect. Merck Veterinary Manual

Possible signs include straining, abdominal pain or swelling, retained feces and absence of a visible anal opening. Those signs require veterinary assessment; they do not establish a diagnosis on their own. The underlying anatomy varies, so a general account cannot determine the defect type or prognosis for an individual puppy.
Can a puppy born without an anus be saved?
Some animals with atresia ani have survived long term after veterinary surgery, but the outcome depends on the specific defect and any associated malformations. Surgery may involve reconstructing normal anatomy. Possible complications include fecal incontinence, and some patients need follow-up procedures.

A 2012 retrospective case series examined 12 puppies and one kitten treated surgically for atresia ani, with or without related malformations. Eleven animals underwent in situ anoplasty; some also needed balloon dilation or revision surgery. All type I and II cases survived at least one year, while two type III puppies were euthanized within 40 days. Of the 10 animals with follow-up, three had fecal incontinence. This small study describes its cases; it cannot predict Tooshie’s outcome or that of another puppy. Ellison and Papazoglou, 2012

In a 25 July 2025 follow-up, PerthNow reported that Tooshie had defecated independently for several days, was gaining weight and was behaving more like a typical puppy. The article quoted Doyle’s social media update: “Tooshie can now poop on his own, he has done so multiple days in a row now.” That was a dated progress report, not confirmation of his present condition. The same June report said the fundraiser had raised nearly $11,000 against an $8,000 target. In July, PerthNow reported nearly 400 donations and more than $16,000 raised; funds beyond Tooshie’s expenses were to go to Moon’s Mission. These are historical snapshots, not current totals. The available reporting does not establish Tooshie’s health or the fundraiser balance in October 2026.

PerthNow reported that supporters brought puppy pads, food and blankets to the clinic. Puppy training pads are an optional practical supply mentioned in the story, not treatment for atresia ani; no specific brand was identified. Tooshie’s care was also supported by public fundraising.
