ASPCA lists several plants as non-toxic to dogs and cats, but the available evidence does not verify that ten of them are easy to grow across USDA Zones 4–9. The clearest named options are common sunflower (Helianthus annuus) and sage (Salvia officinalis). Treat “non-toxic” as a toxicity classification—not permission for pets to eat the plants—and check the exact botanical name before planting.
Plants ASPCA lists as non-toxic to dogs and cats
ASPCA’s combined list names these plants in its non-toxic group for dogs and cats. That classification does not establish that a plant is edible, harmless in any quantity, or suitable for every garden.

These names come from ASPCA’s garden safety guidance. For a particular plant, compare its botanical name with the relevant ASPCA plant database. Broad names such as “sunflower” or “aster” may not identify the exact species or cultivar.
What “non-toxic” does—and does not—mean
ASPCA cautions: “Also, be advised that the consumption of any plant material may cause vomiting and gastrointestinal upset for dogs and cats.” Its plant list is not all-inclusive. A non-toxic listing therefore does not mean that eating the plant is safe or that every similarly named plant is covered. Check the exact plant entry; if your pet may have eaten a poisonous substance, contact a veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control for guidance.

Why this is not a verified ten-plant list for Zones 4–9
The ASPCA sources classify plants by toxicity; they do not establish hardiness zones, growing ease, or cultivation requirements. The six names above are not verified here as hardy throughout Zones 4–9, and the evidence does not support adding four more plants to reach ten. A plant’s suitability can depend on its exact species or cultivar and local conditions, so choose from a horticultural source that gives hardiness information for the specific plant you intend to grow.
Plants to treat with caution
Milkweed (Asclepias spp.) can benefit wildlife, but ASPCA says it can be toxic to household pets. Do not treat its ecological value as evidence of pet safety; if considering it, plan to keep pets from ingesting it and check the exact species in ASPCA’s listing.

Other possible candidates require the same name-by-name check. ASPCA’s separate dog and cat lists include alumroot or coral bells (Heuchera sanguinea) and alyssum (Alyssum spp.); the dog list also names coreopsis (Coreopsis spp.). Those entries alone do not establish that each is non-toxic to both dogs and cats. Verify a candidate in both animal-specific lists before relying on it for a shared garden.
