Its director described after-hours coverage between Murdoch and Osborne Park as inadequate at the time; that was his assessment, not an independent or current coverage audit. The clinic’s website currently lists its address, hours and services for pet owners seeking care.
When Port City Emergency Vets opened
The clinic opened in August 2024, after its team spent more than two years looking for a site in Perth’s southern suburbs, according to PerthNow’s September 6, 2024 report. Director and veterinarian Sam Jameson said the clinic had admitted more pets than expected in its first few weeks. That early caseload is a snapshot from opening, not a current figure.

What the “Murdoch to Osborne Park” shortage claim means
Jameson told PerthNow in 2024 that Perth was “pretty under-serviced” for emergency veterinary care and described a Fremantle-area gap “between Murdoch and Osborne Park, where there’s just no after-hours coverage.” He presented this as his assessment of the situation then. The report does not establish a measured map of coverage, and the statement should not be read as a current inventory of every emergency service in Perth.
Jameson also said that, in some cases, “half an hour is a very long time and it often means the outcomes are very different.” This was his explanation of why timely emergency access matters, not a quantified or universal clinical finding.

Why emergency veterinary staffing was part of the story
Australian Veterinary Association WA president Katie Kreutz told PerthNow that staffing shortages were felt especially sharply in emergency services. She said understaffing could leave remaining staff working longer and harder, increasing burnout risk, and pointed to work-life balance, heavy workloads, low pay and difficult working conditions as contributing factors. These were her attributed explanations in the 2024 report, not a quantified workforce study.
Kreutz described Port City’s opening as “a small relief to the current emergency centres,” while saying those centres still needed more staff and Perth’s emergency veterinary sector had room to grow.

WA Agriculture and Food Minister Jackie Jarvis discussed the broader national veterinary workforce issue, particularly recruitment in regional Australia. She said the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development was working with Murdoch University on initiatives including internships and short rural veterinary placements. Those measures concern the wider workforce and regional recruitment, rather than a direct assessment of Fremantle-area after-hours coverage.
What equipment and services the clinic lists
The capabilities described at opening differ from the clinic’s current online list. PerthNow reported in September 2024 that the clinic had ICU facilities, X-ray and ultrasound machines, orthopaedic surgery facilities and in-house blood-work capability. At that time, a full-time blood bank was being considered and CT was described as a possible future expansion—not as an operating service.

How to read the veterinarian-to-pet figure
PerthNow reported that the Australian Veterinary Association put the number of registered veterinarians at 15,000 for 30.4 million pets in 2023, excluding livestock and wildlife. The figures appeared in the 2024 article as the association’s numbers for “last year”; the original AVA publication is not cited there. They are not a current 2026 count.
