The headline “Quinns Beach welcomes return of shark barrier while Sorrento remains without” describes the situation reported in November 2021, not the current status. The latest report located, published by PerthNow on 2 October 2026, said Quinns Beach’s seasonal enclosure was planned to return between 12 and 16 October, weather permitting. It did not confirm that installation had happened. Sorrento Beach had no announced replacement date; the City of Joondalup was to consider the issue with the Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club.

Why was Sorrento’s barrier removed?
The City of Joondalup removed the enclosure after an assessment found significant damage and structural faults. In 2021, then-mayor Albert Jacob said ongoing monitoring and ad hoc repairs had not removed the risk that existing holes could grow or new ones form. The council decided not to return that enclosure for the 2021 summer and said it would not pursue a new one until a reliable commercial option was available. His comments described the condition of that structure; they do not establish that beach enclosures as a category are ineffective.

ABC reported a fatal shark attack at Sorrento on 18 September 2026 and temporary beach closures afterward. The report establishes why the missing enclosure has drawn renewed attention, but it does not show that the enclosure’s absence caused the attack. ABC’s report on the incident provides that context.

Will Sorrento get a replacement enclosure?
As of PerthNow’s 2 October 2026 report, there was no announced replacement decision or installation schedule. The matter was to be considered with the City of Joondalup and the Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club, so a discussion or willingness to revisit the option should not be treated as a commitment to install one.
WA Fisheries Minister Jackie Jarvis told ABC she was willing to discuss an enclosure with the council, saying funds were available to local governments wishing to install beach enclosures. In the same report, she cautioned: “I don’t want to give people a false sense of security. I cannot mitigate all risks.” ABC’s 19 September 2026 follow-up reports her comments.

How Quinns’ seasonal enclosure works
Quinns has a recurring, seasonal swimming enclosure managed by the City of Wanneroo; it is not in place year-round. The October 2026 schedule called for its removal in April. PerthNow’s 2021 report said the Quinns Mindarie Surf Life Saving Club used the enclosure for junior surf activities and training, and placed its patrol flags beside it. The enclosure and the patrol flags are distinct: the barrier does not replace surf lifesaving patrols or the need to follow beach guidance.

| Project and date | Reported figure | What it refers to |
|---|---|---|
| Sorrento, December 2016 | $845,000 | Installation cost reported by PerthNow in 2021. The City of Joondalup received a $400,000 State Government contribution, according to the same report. |
| Quinns, reported in 2021 | About $440,000 | Initial cost of the Global Marine Enclosures barrier; the State Government contribution was reported as $200,000. |
| Quinns, reported in 2021 | About $60,000 per year | Inspection and maintenance. |
| Quinns, reported in 2021 | $97,000 per year | Removal and reinstallation of the enclosure walls. |
The Quinns operating figures were reported in 2021 and should not be read as present-day costs. The Sorrento capital figure dates to 2016, so comparing it directly with Quinns’ reported 2021 costs would not be a like-for-like comparison. The Government of Western Australia’s 2016 statement described Sorrento’s enclosure as 270 metres seawards and 430 metres across, and recorded $400,000 in State funding and $500,000 from the City of Joondalup. The government announcement gives those project details.
A barrier is not a guarantee of safety
Enclosures are one part of a broader approach to managing shark risk, not a promise that an area is risk-free. In the Government of Western Australia’s 2016 announcement, Premier Colin Barnett said: “No single measure alone will protect water users from shark interactions, but a complementary suite of measures will reduce the risk.” In 2021, PerthNow quoted Jacob urging people to swim between the flags and noting that enclosures could not be guaranteed.

How the original 2021 headline fits the timeline
PerthNow’s 25 November 2021 report described Quinns’ enclosure as reinstalled for summer while Sorrento remained without its damaged enclosure. That was a dated seasonal snapshot: it explains the wording of the headline, but it is not a live status update. The 2026 reporting describes a planned seasonal return at Quinns and an unresolved discussion about Sorrento, rather than confirming that either installation or replacement has taken place.
