Joondalup’s Sorrento Beach shark alert tower is part of a coastal warning system announced in September 2022. A solar-powered receiver detects tagged sharks nearby and shares detection information with SharkSmart and Surf Life Saving WA; the tower can then warn beachgoers with lights, sirens and audio messages. It is a safety layer, not a barrier, and it cannot detect every shark.
What was announced for Sorrento Beach?
In September 2022, the Western Australian Government announced four next-generation tagged-shark detection receivers between South Mullaloo and Ocean Reef, connected to new onshore warning towers. The receiver off Sorrento Beach is solar-powered. The release said the newer receivers could detect tagged sharks across a larger range than the previous equipment and transmitted information over the digital phone network rather than by satellite. The state announcement also described 37 receivers across the metropolitan coast and regional locations including Albany and Esperance at that time; that was a historical network-wide figure, not a current count for Sorrento.

How does the Sorrento shark warning system work?
Receivers detect tagged sharks
The receiver listens for tracking tags carried by sharks. When it detects a tagged shark, information is sent to the SharkSmart WA app, Surf Life Saving WA and the SharkSmart website. A detection is not the same as a report of an untagged shark or a confirmed beach closure.
Towers communicate local warnings
The onshore tower uses lights, sirens and audio messages to alert people at the beach to tagged-shark activity. City of Joondalup council minutes from March 2024 say towers can activate automatically when a shark is detected in the area. City Field Officers can also activate a tower manually from a mobile device after receiving a shark-sighting report. The council minutes describe the manual activation option.

Other safety measures have different roles

These systems supplement one another; none should be treated as proof that the water is shark-free. The 2022 state release also said that when a Surf Life Saving WA helicopter sounds its siren and hovers above a beach, people should leave the water for at least 60 minutes. That instruction concerns a helicopter warning, not a tower alert or a current closure notice.
Does the tower detect every shark?
No. The receiver detects tagged sharks, not every shark in the water. The City of Joondalup says the Shark Activity Map shows available information: not all sharks are tagged and not all sightings are reported. The City’s beach safety guidance advises visitors to check available alerts, read beach access signs, swim between the flags and follow lifeguard and beach-safety instructions. No effectiveness percentage specific to the Sorrento tower is established in the cited material.

What happened at Sorrento in September 2026?
SharkSmart WA / DPIRD reported a possible shark incident at Sorrento Beach on 18 September 2026, and the City closed all beaches within its boundaries as a precaution. On 21 September, the City announced that all City beaches had reopened, from BEN sign J210 in the south to J37 in the north. DPIRD’s incident notice and the City’s reopening notice document those dated updates. They do not establish current beach conditions; check live official alerts before visiting.

- Check the SharkSmart WA app, website or Shark Activity Map for current reported sightings and tagged-shark detections.
- At the beach, read access signs, swim between the flags and follow warnings, lifeguard directions and any closure notice.
- Report a shark sighting to WA Water Police at 9442 8600. Call 000 for a beach emergency.
Because not all sharks are tagged and not all sightings are reported, an empty map or inactive tower is not a guarantee about conditions in the water.
