The kittens were taken first to Cannington Perth Vet Emergency and then cared for by Cat Haven. The report said their mother had likely escaped, but did not confirm that she was found or that the kittens were later adopted.
What happened in Cannington
PerthNow reporter Ava Berryman reported that the man found six kittens inside a taped-up cardboard box dumped in a skip bin. A second box beside them appeared to have held their mother. The report said the mother had likely escaped but could not free her kittens; it did not establish that as certain.

After the discovery on Monday, the kittens were quickly taken to Cannington Perth Vet Emergency. Cat Haven was caring for them at the time of the report. The rescuer was not named in the article.
What was known about the kittens afterward
At publication, Cat Haven expected the kittens to become available for adoption in three to four weeks. That was an estimate reported on 18 February 2025, not confirmation that the kittens were ultimately adopted. PerthNow did not report whether their mother was found or what happened to the kittens after that forecast.

Cat Haven’s response and surrender support described in the report
Cat Haven marketing manager Amber Ashford condemned the abandonment and warned of the danger from the afternoon heat. As quoted by PerthNow, she said: “There is never an excuse to dump an animal in such a cruel manner,” and “With temperatures soaring in the afternoon, these kittens would have been dead in a number of hours.” She also said: “No animal deserves such mistreatment like we witnessed yesterday.”
PerthNow reported that Cat Haven had received more than 4,000 surrenders over the summer preceding its article. That figure was attributed to Cat Haven through the newspaper; the article did not specify the summer’s exact start and end dates.

The report described several ways Cat Haven was trying to make help available for unwanted cats: amnesty crates at its Shenton Park facility for after-hours or anonymous surrenders, a “What to Do If You Find Kittens” guide, and desexing for female cats when a litter was brought in. These were arrangements described in the February 2025 article; the report does not establish whether they remain available now.
Ashford’s message about surrender was direct. As PerthNow quoted her: “We place no judgment on people surrendering cats or kittens to us and will always take any that are in need.”
