None is a good choice for a typical small decorative bowl as a long-term home. A fish might survive in one for a while, but a bowl generally cannot provide the swimming room, stable water conditions, effective filtration, oxygen exchange, and temperature control fish need. Choose a species-appropriate, filtered aquarium instead.
Why a bowl is unsuitable for fish
A bowl’s small water volume can change quickly, making conditions harder to keep stable. Its shape and limited surface area can restrict oxygen exchange, while its size may leave too little room for an effective filter. Temperature can also fluctuate rapidly. These are ongoing welfare problems; they do not mean every fish in a bowl will die immediately.

RSPCA UK cautions that “Decorative or ‘fun’ tanks, like goldfish bowls, jars, or children’s tanks, have not been designed with fish welfare in mind.” RSPCA UK’s aquarium guidance explains the linked issues of size, filtration, oxygen exchange, and temperature.
Goldfish and bettas are not bowl fish
Goldfish
Goldfish need far more room than a decorative bowl provides. Published recommendations differ: RSPCA Australia recommends at least 50 litres for one goldfish, with tank dimensions related to the fish’s adult body length; RSPCA UK recommends at least 60 litres per goldfish. These are separate organizations’ husbandry recommendations, not interchangeable rules to average. Both rule out a traditional bowl.
#1 Best Overall
- Compact: Dimension: 7.9"x5.9"x5.9"; 1 Gallon tank; ideal for small spaces, aquarium beginners caring for a single betta, a few shrimp, snails, or a tiny goldfish. Also works as a temporary hospital tank, quarantine tank, or desktop decor (After deducting the filter part, the actual usable volume is approximately 0.8 gal and it will further decrease after adding substrate)
- Customizable Lighting: features a 3-color LED hood with 10 adjustable brightness levels to showcase your fish and tank décor
- Self-Cleaning Filtration: Hidden filter keeps tank clean for easier maintenance. Note: Clean filter sponge and pump regularly to avoid clogging; regular water changes are required — this small tank does not support zero-maintenance use
- Thoughtful Design: its top feeding hole allows for easy feeding without removing the lid; four silicone feet for stability and quiet operation
- Complete Starter Kit: 1x 1 gallon Fish Tank, 1x Filter Sponge, 1x Adjustable Water Pump, 1x LED Hood (Note: The light requires a power transformer (not included) for use. Compatible transformers include 5V 0.5A, 5V 1A, 5V 1.5A, and 5V 2A)
Bettas
A betta’s ability to breathe at the water’s surface does not make a bowl an appropriate home. The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine notes that bowls often do not allow normal swimming and hiding behavior. RSPCA Queensland recommends at least 15 litres for a betta and says 20 litres or more is ideal; it also recommends suitable heating to maintain a steady, appropriate temperature.
Why a tiny fish is not automatically a bowl fish
Small body size alone does not determine whether a fish can live in a bowl. Adult swimming needs, social behavior, water conditions, and compatibility matter too. Many tropical fish—including danios, tetras, rainbowfish, rasboras, and many catfishes—are shoaling species that should be kept in groups of six or more, according to RSPCA UK’s guidance on keeping fish together. A bowl is not a practical way to meet those group and habitat needs.

Choose an aquarium around the fish, not the space available
As a general starting point, RSPCA UK recommends an aquarium larger than 45 x 30 x 30 cm—about 40 litres—but that is not a universal stocking allowance or a guarantee that a particular species will thrive in that volume. Goldfish and bettas, for example, have their own published recommendations. Check the requirements of the exact species and its adult size before buying either fish or tank.

- Adult size and swimming space
- Whether the fish needs companions, and the appropriate group size
- Aquarium volume and footprint
- Filter capacity and the ability to maintain stable water
- Temperature requirements and whether a heater is needed
- Water conditions and compatibility with other fish
Plan for a suitable aquarium filter and a thermometer. Tropical species that need warm water may also need a heater. Adding equipment to a small bowl does not make the bowl a suitable habitat.

Set up the aquarium before adding fish
RSPCA UK recommends fishless cycling when establishing a new aquarium. Follow detailed setup guidance before introducing fish; do not treat filling a tank and switching on a filter as proof that it is ready. RSPCA UK’s fish-keeping guidance covers fishless cycling.
