In March 2013, South African owners Henry and Patricia Devine agreed to rename their unraced colt after racing officials raised concern about its name, Black Caviar. A later South African racing account identifies the new name as Black Beluga. The colt’s name dispute was separate from his withdrawal from a Durbanville maiden race, which the contemporary report attributed to a tweaked joint.
Why the Devines agreed to change the name
A 6 March 2013 report by Christian Nicolussi, published by Fox Sports Australia and credited to the Daily Telegraph, said the Devines were willing to choose another name after a call from the jockey club. The report said Racing NSW chief executive Peter V’Landys had written to his South African counterpart urging a change, after which South African officials asked the owners to reconsider the name. Patricia Devine explained that the name reflected the colt’s sire, Black Minnaloushe, and the owners’ association of caviar with a sought-after commodity: “We named him Black Caviar because he’s by Black Minnaloushe, and caviar is a sought-after commodity.” She also said the colt had been named more than two years earlier, before Black Caviar became a worldwide phenomenon. That timing is her account; the report does not independently establish the colt’s registration date.

The International Federation of Horseracing Authorities’ International List of Protected Names, dated 15 April 2013, lists BLACK CAVIAR at the request of the Australian Racing Board. The document states: “In respect of Article 14 of the International Agreement, names shown on the present list cannot be allowed for any horse.” This confirms the name’s protected status in that dated list; it does not establish when the South African colt was registered or which official contacted the owners. The colt’s replacement name and race withdrawal
Black Beluga
A later Sporting Post article, published on 24 April 2019, says South Africa’s National Horseracing Authority insisted on a change and identifies the colt’s replacement name as Black Beluga. Read the Sporting Post account.
Scratched because of a joint issue
The 2013 report said the colt was scratched from a Durbanville maiden after he tweaked a joint. It explicitly treated that as unrelated to the naming controversy, so the withdrawal should not be presented as a consequence of the name change.
